Stories of Pain, Pressure and Promise

ree

Is there a more emotionally charged holiday than Mother’s Day? I say this as someone who has an incredible mother, two beautiful daughters and five amazing grandchildren. I’m keenly aware of all the potential hurts and expectations surrounding Mother’s Day and, if I can be honest, I’m always a little relieved when it’s over.

The same hurts and expectations that can taint a national holiday are reflective of the pressures that often affect the families we serve.  Expectations of what they thought and hoped life would look like when they got pregnant vs. the reality of life as it is because of the hurts they’ve survived. That gap can be bridged by the grace of Jesus Christ and the power of His Gospel, both of which women experience firsthand at Queen City Pregnancy Resource Center.

It’s the joy and privilege of the QC PRC staff to serve families, save children and share the Gospel.  We do this every single day, by God’s faithfulness and through your generosity.

For example, Abigail* is a woman we served last fall and then spoke with again a few days ago. When we first met this client, she was planning on aborting. She said her family is “religious” and her mother would be disappointed in her choices that led to the pregnancy. Abigail was sure her mother would not be supportive, and she felt like she couldn’t go through having a baby without her mother’s support. Our staff assured her that her mother’s faith would bring her around; Abigail left that day feeling overwhelmed after seeing her ultrasound. The next day she told us that her family was “coming around.” Fast forward to this week and a phone call one of our volunteers made to Abigail to check on her and pray with her. Her mom was in the room with Abigail and after the volunteer prayed her mom chimed in to say, “Thank you, Lord!” Abigail is due this week and we – and she -- would appreciate your prayers for a safe delivery.

Abigail’s is one of two stories I wanted to share with you this month of women who were able to have a very different Mother’s Day because of your faithfulness and generosity. Your prayers and gifts empowered them to make life-affirming choices. You just read Abigail’s story, now, if you have one more minute, click here to listen to just a little bit of the other client whose story you impacted.

There are so many more women to serve that we can get overwhelmed by the numbers. Last month we served the highest number of clients since the birth of QC PRC, but right now in Charlotte there is a two to three week wait for abortions.  And with recent changes in Florida laws, "North Carolina should buckle up. By all indications, due to Florida’s Supreme Court decision to uphold a law limiting abortion at six weeks of gestation, North Carolina is poised to become the 2024 abortion capital of the South. The Florida law went into effect on May 1, and after that date, North Carolina will see a notable increase in the number of women from out of state coming here to seek an abortion,” says Mary Potters Summa, J.D., general counsel for NC Values Coalition.1

It breaks our hearts that North Carolina would be seen as a destination for abortion, but we must be prepared for what lies ahead. How do we do that? First and foremost, by trusting in the promise we’re given in 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

So, I will use the sound mind God’s given me to remind myself, the QC PRC staff and you of the words a precious donor texted me recently: “What is important to remember is that everything that I might give and that you might do is worth it for just one of those.”
