As many surrounding states have started protecting pre-born babies at conception, North Carolina has become one of the last remaining states in the Southeast where abortion remains legal through 12 weeks.
That change has turned Charlotte into an abortion destination — drawing women from across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee seeking abortion services.
Abortion Laws by State
The number of abortions have outpaced live births in our city.
The numbers show from 2023 there were about 15,103 live births in Mecklenburg county. And there were nearly 19,257 abortions.

But here’s what that really means.
Because Charlotte is an abortion destination, many of those 19,257 abortions were performed on women traveling from out of state. Most come for one purpose — the abortion — and then return home.
Of those 19,257 abortions, 5,339 were women from Mecklenburg County.
That is our city.
These are our neighbors.
These are the women we can reach.
Right now, we are serving approximately one-fifth of them.
And thousands more are walking past hope every year.
